| SAC Day Vision for Education
Our desire is to help your high school student develop those qualities
needed for independent study that will serve him or her well in the
college or work environment. Oxford Tutorials states this goal very
well: we "provide guidance for the self-motivated student who
understands that the real work of learning takes place in his or her
own study time, with a book and a pencil in hand, and an active
mind."
SAC Day exists in order to help parents and students with the
transition from the homeschool to the college/work environment.
Decisions of the SAC Day Board are made in keeping with this vision and
with the SAC Day Purpose statement. (See below.) |
| HCCH Mission Statement
HCCH is a Christian organization established to provide support,
education, and fellowship for local homeschooling families who are
striving to train up their children in the Lord. Our existence
depends on dedicated members who invest their time and resources.
Secondary Academic Class (SAC) Day Purpose
In accordance with the HCCH mission, SAC Day has been established for
HCCH member families in an effort to meet an academic need that can not be
met at home. Due to limitations with time, facilities, and
instructors, it is the purpose of SAC Day to offer academic classes on the
high school level only.
Please understand that SAC Day is not meant to replace your homeschool
studies, but to enhance them. SAC Day cannot meet the total academic
needs of each student. We are only one piece in your student's
educational experience. |
| SAC Day Organization
A board of at least four HCCH members will oversee all administrative,
organizational, and functional details for SAC Day. This all-woman
board will serve in a voluntary capacity, and will appoint new board
members as the need arises. One board member will also serve as a
liaison between the SAC Board and the HCCH Board.
The SAC Board will also:
 | report to the HCCH Board and be under their direction and authority. |
 | set the class schedule and calendar |
 | handle scheduling arrangements with BBC and any problems that arise
with the facility. |
 | interview and approve all tutors. |
 | appoint new members for the board as needed. |
 | assign one member as tutor liaison. |
 | help resolve conflicts between students, parents and tutors, if
needed. |
 | offer occasional workshops on topics of high school interest. |
 | plan HCCH graduation ceremonies, with assistance from parents of
graduation seniors. |
SAC Day is a primary committee of HCCH as described in Article V,
Section 1 of the HCCH By-laws. |
| Student Qualities
Students who choose to attend SAC Day will have an opportunity to
practice the following character traits during the course of their
studies. It is very important that each student demonstrates these
characteristics, as they are considered essential in order to have a
successful experience at SAC Day.
 | Self-motivation |
 | Dependability |
 | Accountability |
 | Responsibility |
 | Team Player |
 | Consistency |
 | Self-discipline |
 | Good work ethic |
 | Integrity |
|
| Family Participation Requirements
Participation in SAC Day is completely voluntary and should be
considered a privilege for high school students. BEFORE REGISTERING
YOUR STUDENT FOR CLASSES, REALIZE THAT A SERIOUS COMMITMENT IS REQUIRED OF
ALL FAMILIES AND STUDENTS.
 | Each family must be a member in good standing of HCCH to participate
in academic classes and must have homeschooled their student for at
least one year immediately prior to attending SAC Day. |
 | SAC Day is intended for high-school students only. A high
school student is defined as a student who is 14 years or older by
September 1 of the current school year and is functioning on at least
a 9th grade academic level. |
 | The only exception to the above rule is that Algebra I
students (13 or older by September 1 of the current school year) may
participate in this class on a trial basis. |
 | Parents are responsible for paying all tuition on time. A late
fee will be accessed for any late payments. |
 | As there is a class limit in most classes, returning SAC Day
students receive first priority on class selections. |
 | Tutors are making a commitment for the entire year, therefore we ask
that you make a similar commitment. Students are expected to
attend classes for the entire year. Our tutors make plans based
on the number of students that register for their classes, so please
consider your class choices carefully before you register. |
 | Students must attend classes every week (unless there is an
emergency). Habitual absences will result in students being
asked to drop classes. |
 | Parents must be willing to work diligently to resolve all discipline
issues with their students. |
 | Each family must provide emergency medical and contact information. |
 | Each family must attend a parent/student orientation and must sign a
participation form indicating the handbook has been read (BOTH parents
and ALL SAC Day students must sign this form). |
 | Families will agree to try and resolve any complaints or conflicts
with the person involved before taking the complaint to anyone else,
remembering Romans 12:18, "If it is possible, so far as it
depends on you, live peacably with all." The SAC Day Board
will make every effort to encourage families to handle conflicts in a
manner consistent with Biblical principles. |
 | If a conflict cannot be resolved among the immediate participants,
the family should bring their problem to the SAC Day Board within a
reasonable amount of time utilizing the Conflict Resolution procedure
below. |
 | Each family must agree to participate in one service day at Bulverde
Baptist Church (BBC) during the fall, or pay a Building Use Fee of
$25. (The service day helps offset some of our expenses for the
use of the church facility.) This fee will be collected at SAC
Day registration, and returned to you if your family attends the
service day. |
 | Please understand, some classes, such as Theater and Journalism,
are GROUP efforts and will require additional time commitments from
students and families. Your student will be expected to attend
extra meetings, practices or performances that may not occur during
SAC Day hours. You will be required to sign a statement
confirming your commitment to these additional requirements.
Since the group is dependent on your full participation, please do not
register for these classes if they conflict with your family's
schedule. |
|
| SAC Day Fees
The following is a list of all fees associated with SAC Day:
 | All class fees are determined by the tutor. Fees may be paid
by check made out to each tutor and are collected by the SAC Day Tutor
Liaison on the first day of each semester. However, families
have the option to pay monthly, as long as they pay on the first class
day of each month. If any family is consistently late with
payments, they will be required to pay the semester fee in its
entirety, effective immediately. |
 | If payment for a class is delinquent (payment is overdue for more
than one month), the student will be required to drop the class until
all payments (and late fees) are paid. In case of financial
emergencies, please see the tutor immediately. |
 | A late fee of $5.00 per student/per class will be assessed for
EACH WEEK the class fee is delinquent (beginning with the 1st
class meeting of the month). This late fee is paid with the late
tuition in a check made out to the tutor. If the class fee is
still delinquent at the end of the month, the student will be dropped
from the class. |
 | Additional costs associated with classes, such as lab fees,
textbooks, and supply fees, are the responsibility of each family. |
 | Any student who voluntary drops a class during the year must pay a
full month's tuition for each class they drop (or give the tutor a
month's notice before dropping the class). |
 | A non-refundable, yearly registration fee is required of each family
enrolled in SAC Day. This fee must be paid before the student
can attend any classes. Early registration ($40) is held for
two weeks in May and is for the convenience of returning SAC Day
families only. Regular registration ($60) begins in
mid-May and ends June 30. Late registration ($75) begins August
1 and ends on the Friday before SAC Day classes begin. There
will be no registration after that date. |
 | At registration, a Building Use Fee of $25 will be collected from
each family. (This fee is described above under "Family
Participation Requirements".) All fees collected will
be deposited immediately. If your family participates in the BBC
service day, this fee will be returned to you. If your family
does not participate, your fee will be given to BBC as part of our
Building Use donation. The service day is scheduled according to
BBC's needs and wishes. We will announce the date for this
service day as soon as it is scheduled. |
|
| Building Use Restrictions
All SAC Day participants and their families are guests of Bulverde
Baptist Church (BBC) and should remember to treat the facility with the
utmost care.
During SAC Day classes, please limit the use of BBC and its grounds as
specified below:
 | Gym building - Students may use the bathrooms,
fellowship hall, and classrooms. The kitchen facility is off
limits without adult supervision. Please do not use kitchen
utensils and paper goods. |
 | Gymnasium - Students may use the gym to play
basketball. It is not to be used as a meeting place for non-SAC
Day students or children. |
 | Playground - Children may use the playground only with
parental supervision. NO CHILDREN should be left unattended. |
 | Church Building - The entire church building including
the offices and sanctuary are off limits. Please do not enter
this building. |
 | Parking Lot - Students are not allowed to loiter in
the parking lot. (This applies to students who drive their own
cars, as well.) Please make arrangements to pick up students on
time. |
 | In order to preserve a quiet and studious environment, we ask that
families wait outside the building for their students. Families
should limit their use of the facility during SAC Day hours.
Thank you. |
 | In case of a problem or damage to the facility, please notify a SAC
Day Board member as soon as possible. Please do not notify
the church staff with these problems. |
 | Please do not contact the church about any events or classes you
may want to schedule at BBC. Our SAC Day liaison with BBC,
Rachel Scott, will handle all concerns, issues and questions you may
have about the church facility. |
 | Please do not call the church office and ask them to relay messages
to students, tutors, or other adults working at SAC Day. |
It is very important that we maintain a respectful and gracious
relationship with BBC so we may continue to use this wonderful facility. |
| Student Academic Guidelines
All students are required to follow the academic guidelines established
below:
 | Students must bring all required books and materials to class each
week. This includes aper, pens, textbooks, or other materials
that the tutor requires. |
 | Students are required to attend classes with all classwork
assignments completed. It is very important that each student
attends class ready to fully participate in all discussions and
assignments. This rule will be strictly enforced by tutors and
the SAC Day Board. |
 | A student who habitually attends class unprepared (3 unexcused
occurances) will face expulsion from that class for the remainder of
the year and no fees will be refunded. The student may return
the following school year under academic probation (for the first
semester) as long as he has completed the work he did not finish the
previous year. |
 | If a student is academically unable to keep up with assignments,
he/she will be asked to drop the class and may retake the class again
the following year. |
 | Students or parents may not audit classes. |
 | Students should expect to spend significant time each week
completing their SAC Day assignments. Self-motivation and an
independent work ethic are critical for success at SAC Day. |
 | Tutors will determine whether a student is academically prepared to
handle a particular class. If a student is unable to complete a
class due to the tutor's recommendation, no further fees will be
expected from the student. |
 | Some classes have prerequisites. Please adhere to these; it is
essential that your student is adequately prepared for the classes in
which he is enrolled. |
Make-up class/tutoring policy:
 | If a student is absent from class, he should get his assignments
from another student, if at all possible. Do not ask the tutor
at the last minute for work. |
 | Make-ups for unexcused absences will be charged a fee,
according to the tutor's policy. (This fee may vary depending on
the class and tutor.) |
 | Make-ups for excused absences, or for students who are
struggling in a particular area, may not necessarily be charged a
fee. However, this decision is at the discretion of the tutor on
a case-by-case basis. |
 | Tutoring sessions at SAC Day are only for students presently
enrolled in the tutor's class. |
|
| Student Behavior Guidelines
All students are required to follow the behavior guidelines established
below:
 | Students are expected to maintain exemplary behavior in class
towards tutors, other students, and adults. This includes
refraining from rude comments, physically touching others, arguing,
gossiping, cheating, lying, stealing, sleeping in class, or any other
behaviors deemed inappropriate by the SAC Day Board which are not
consistent with Christian principles. |
 | Any student who participates in inappropriate behavior (see above)
may face immediate expulsion. |
 | Students must be respectful, cooperative, and obedient towards
tutors and parents at all times. Any disrespectful
behaviors, attitudes, or speech will immediately be brought to the
student's attention. Any continued disrespect will result in
parental notification and possible expulsion if not corrected. |
 | During classes, students should be quiet when the tutor is speaking,
refrain from interrupting or distracting others, and participate in
class discussions. |
 | Failure to comply with the classroom behavior guidelines may result
in the student being expelled from the class with no fees refunded. |
 | Students will not be allowed to wander the facility during SAC
Day. Any student leaving the building or grounds for any
reason (between class periods or during lunch) should notify the study
hall monitor or a SAC Day Board member. |
 | No student may leave the facility with another student unless
both sets of parents have given written or verbal permission to a SAC
Day Board member or the study hall monitor. Students may leave
with a sibling. |
 | Students must leave SAC Day when their last class is finished for
the day (unless they are waiting for a sibling to finish a
class). Students may not loiter (in the parking lot, in the
building or on the grounds at BBC) after classes are over. |
 | Students should show respect for BBC property at all times.
(This means do not harm property in any way.) If an accident
should occur, please notify a SAC Day Board member (or study hall
monitor) immediately. |
 | SAC Day is an academic environment. As such, no boy/girl
dating relationships are allowed at SAC Day. This means that
flirting, holding hands, and other displays of physical affection
between boys and girls can not occur at any SAC Day function.
Any violation of this rule will result in immediate parental
notification. |
 | Gossiping will not be allowed at SAC Day. If a student has a
conflict with another person during SAC Day, that student should go
directly to the person involved. Students should also speak with
a tutor or parent if they do not know how to handle a particular
issue. |
 | Students who have a break between class periods are expected to
attend to study hall (unless they leave with their parents.) |
 | All students who utilize study hall must remember that it is a
privilege, and not a right. Students must submit to the
authority of SAC Day Board members and Study Hall moms who oversee
study hall. |
 | All study hall students must exhibit orderly, quiet behavior in
study hall, or they will be asked to leave SAC Day during their break
between classes. This means no throwing objects, disruptive
behavior of any kind, musical instruments and loud
conversations. No tomfoolery allowed! |
 | Students should not wear any clothing or other articles of aparel
that are immodest or could be disruptive to others. Some items
considered inappropriate for SAC Day are as follows (but are not
limited to): sleeveless shirts, short-shorts or short skirts, clothing
with offensive words or images, tattoos, boys' earrings, and shirts
that do not cover midriffs. No unnatural hair colors will be
allowed. The SAC Day Board has final authority on this issue. |
 | All decisions by the tutor and/or the SAC Day Board are
binding. However, students may address grievances by following
the conflict resolution procedure outlined below. |
|
| Parent Guidelines
In order to help SAC Day run efficiently, please follow the guidelines
below:
 | High school-aged students may be dropped off at SAC Day, as long as
they follow the behavior and academic guidelines listed below. |
 | No siblings of SAC Day students may be let at SAC Day without
parental supervision. There will be no childcare available
at SAC Day. |
 | Please do not drop students off early for their classes. |
 | You MUST pick up your students on time or you will be charged a
babysitting fee of $5.00 for every ten minutes you are late. This
fee is payable to the person who has to stay and wait for you.
Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to provide extra time in case of
problems. If you know ahead of time you are going to be late,
make arrangements for someone else to pick up your student. |
 | At the end of the day, all unclaimed students will be carted around
town in the car of the SAC Day Board member on duty, if that Board
member has other obligations after SAC Day. It will be the
responsibility of the parent to arrange pick-up. |
 | Parents may not audit classes, attend classes on a regular basis, or
sit in as an observer. |
 | One parent from each family will be required to monitor study hall
at least once each semester. (See below.) |
 | If you have a problem with the facility or any questions about SAC
Day, please do not bother the church staff. Contact a SAC
Day Board member, or Rachel Scott, our BBC liaison, for help with your
questions. It is very important that we are respectful of the
church staff's time. |
 | Please be prompt in paying tutors each month. SAC Day's
reputation depends partly on how we treat our tutors. |
 | Encourage your students to handle any disagreements or conflicts
they have directly with the person involved. (See Matthew
18:15-16). |
 | Please realize that the SAC Day Board, study hall monitors, and
tutors are in charge of your student when he/she is attending SAC Day
classes. As a result, these adults may need to speak to your
student about behavioral issues as the need arises. Depending on
the severity of the problem, parents may or may not be notified. |
|
| Study Hall Monitor Duties
The following guidelines should help parents understand the duties of
study hall monitor.
 | One parent from every family will help monitor study hall at least
once per semester. Study hall hours are from 8:00 until 4:30
p.m. |
 | Parents may bring younger children with them on the days they
work. However, children must be supervised at all times, and
must not disturb classes. |
 | It is the responsibility of the parent to trade dates with
another parent if she is unable to work on her assigned date. |
 | Please notify Linda Frambes, our Study Hall Coordinator, of any
changes. |
 | If a parent fails to show up for study hall duty (without giving
advanced notification), the parent must pay $25 to the Board member
who must work in the parent's place. |
 | Two study hall monitors will be available each SAC Day. These
two monitors each oversee a study hall room and keep track of students
playing basketball in the gym. |
 | Monitors must not allow students to participate in loud,
destructive, or disruptive behavior during study hall. |
 | The study hall monitors should also oversee lunch. If tables,
chairs and floor need to be cleaned, the monitor is in charge of
assigning these duties to students. |
 | Please return all study hall rooms to good order when you leave for
the day (push chairs in, put tables back, and empty trash cans). |
 | Parents will be provided with a list of students who are signed up
for study hall each half hour. Please make sure each student is
accounted for. |
 | All students are required to have permission from the study hall
monitor before they can go anywhere (this includes the bathroom,
another study hall room, the gym or outside.) |
 | Students may leave have the church property to go to lunch if they
have a parent's permission (written or verbal) to the study hall
monitor or SAC Day Board member. |
 | Students may not leave the church property with other students
unless parental permission (written or verbal) has been given to the
study hall monitor or a SAC Day Board member by both sets of
parents. Students may leave SAC Day with a sibling. |
|
| Conflict Resolution
Although it is our goal to have very few conflicts at SAC Day, we
understand that sometimes they may arise between parents, students and
tutors. Therefore the SAC Day Board will utilize the following
Biblical model for handling conflicts that arise.
- First, all families and students should try to resolve complaints
and conflicts directly with the person(s) involved, as stated in
Matthew 18:15. If at all possible, do not bring other people
into the problem. This includes gossiping to others about
problems and conflicts.
- If the problem remains unresolved, the issue should be brought to
the attention of a SAC Day Board member in a reasonable amount of time
(see Matthew 18:16). The Board will communicate with the
individuals involved, and parents may or may not be involved in the
initial stage of resolution.
- Depending on the severity of the conflict or if the conflict remains
unresolved, parents will be notified.
- The Board expects all families, tutors, and students to fully
participate in resolving all conflicts. All people involved
should put into practice Philippians 2:2-4: "fulfill my
joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord,
of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or
conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than
himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own
interests, but also for the interests of others."
- Board members will work diligently and quickly to resolve any
conflicts. Many times these issues require prayer and discussion
with several individuals before they can be resolved. Please be
patient as we seek to do what is best for everyone concerned.
Remember:
- Go directly to the person involved
- Go to the SAC Day Board, if still unresolved.
- Participate fully in resolving all conflicts.
- Forgive and adhere to the resolution of the conflict.
|
| Discipline Policy
Any problems involving student behavior will be handled in the
following manner. Please remember that exemplary student behavior
is to be expected and will be the standard at all SAC Day classes and
activities. Any student failing to abide by the behavior
guidelines outlined above will be subject to the following discipline
measures.
- At the first offense, the behavior issue will be brought to the
student's attention by his/her tutor, study hall monitor or a SAC Day
Board member.
- If the problem is not resolved, the behavior will be brought to the
parent's attention.
- If the problem persists, the parent will be asked to sit in class
with the student for the remainder of that semester.
- Subsequent problems will result in the student's expulsion from that
class for the remainder fo the semester and no fees will be refunded.
- Severe problems will result in immediate expulsion from all SAC
Day classes and activities for the remainder of the school year.
No fees will be refunded to families when a student has been expelled.
Examples of severe and unacceptable behavior include, but are not
limited to: drug use, lying, stealing, cheating, filthy or
offensive language, possession of weapons, blatant, habitual
disrespect toward tutors and/or parents, intentional harm of any
person or the church, or inappropriate behavior with the opposite sex.
- All student behavior problems requiring SAC Day Board intervention
will be prayerfully considered and acted upon. The SAC Day Board
decisions are binding.
